In subsequent visits is also the democratization process and the role that private media issue, among others, private radio stations in the capital Dakar. In addition, employees of the show EED partner organization “Groupement pour l’Etude et l’Enseignement de la population” (GEEP) the delegation participants how to improve Senegal’s education and health education of women.

But the land in the far west of Africa is one of the least developed countries in the world. It has few raw materials and the climate limits the possibilities for agriculture: Two-thirds of Senegal are part of the Sahel. The amount of rain that falls there in the annual average would indeed be sufficient for a profitable agriculture – but it rains too irregular. That is why it always comes back to droughts and crop failures. Other problems caused to the intensive use of natural resources. Deforestation and overgrazing lead to serious environmental damage. Given this situation, many people wander off from the rural regions. Meanwhile, almost half the population lives in cities, one in five lives in the Senegalese capital Dakar. The result is growing slums, rising pollution and a high youth unemployment. The strong population growth of around three per cent makes the situation worse.
The Senegal is separated by the neighboring Gambia in a north and a smaller southern part. In the southern region of Casamance, the broad political and economic isolation from the rest of the country has led to an independence movement. Since 1982, there are violent clashes. Senghor who led US Goree to gain promotion to the top flight in Senegal polled 174 votes to defeat El Hadji Malick Gackou (130 votes) and umar Diop (26 votes). Two other candidates: former international goalkeeper Cheikh Seck and former vice-president of the FA Alioune Cisse withdrew a day to the elections. Senghor headed a caretaker committee after the FA executive committee was dissolved following a shock first round exit of the country at last year’s Africa Cup of Nations. The caretaker committee among other things launched a professional football league recently.

29 (UPI) — Senegalese police officers strengthened the joint African Union-United Nations peacekeeping force in Darfur by adding 137 officers the UN said. The peacekeeping force protects civilians and ensures access for humanitarian workers in the Darfur region of the Sudan. The officers are part of a unit with specialized training in high-risk operations. Their main task is protection of civilians and they often do community policing or work in camps housing displaced people the UN said.

“The government is going to activate the emergency plan to relieve the people” Souleymane Ndene Ndiaye said on public television Wednesday night. A sum of two billion Central African francs (three million euros) has been released by the government to cope with the flooding said Ndiaye who was speaking after a meeting with the mayors of communities that have been affected. The emergency plan will allow the authorities to release financial assistance and mobilise equipment throughout the country. Several parts of Dakar and its suburbs as well as towns such as Mbour in the west and Kaffrine in the centre are under water after heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday.

In Senegal in particular IFC aims to support improved infrastructure especially in the power sector. "For security reasons we have taken 45 volunteers and 14 staff into our training centre (in Senegal)" Demba Sibibe a Peace Corps official said on Monday. government-backed group said on its Web site its volunteer programme would remain suspended until security conditions improved. The move by the group which has operated in Mauritania for more than 40 years comes after a surge in violence in the normally quiet former French colony struggling to clamp down on an al Qaeda presence within its borders.

The Coalition for Human Rights in The Gambia was formed by Gambians living in Dakar and Senegalese and other international human rights media and civil society groups. These include Amnesty International Senegal branch The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) Press Union (Synpics) African Assembly for the Defence of Human Rights (RADDH) Inter Africa Network for Women Media Gender and Development (FAMEDEV) Network of Press and Parliament in Senegal (Reppas) and Radio Alternative Voice for Gambians (AVG). As part of its immediate activities members of the coalition on Tuesday August 25th 2009 met with members of European missions overseeing The Gambia. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Dutch Austrian German French Spanish and Swedish Embassies. During the meeting the coalition’s delegates showcased series of human rights violations that has been taking place in The Gambia. The cases include the recent the incarceration of the six journalists journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh’s continuous disappearance arrest of villagers accused of being witches and the issue of Nigerian Mercenary Judges in the country.

The downside of the recourse to sovereignty is its assumption that other Africans are foreigners against whom power must be protected. This thinking also denies African economies larger markets for their products. ?Sovereignty? also masks the weakness of Africans at a time when other people have pooled political power in vast territories like China India Brazil Russia and the United States of America. The very colonial countries that were the ?foreigners? against whom independent African states wished to protect their sovereignty are themselves building the European Union as a bigger source of power in the global arena.

She said that after that episode she knew very well that she is under siege but could not react to any of their actions.
