Senegal activates emergency plan in wake of floods

“The government is going to activate the emergency plan to relieve the people” Souleymane Ndene Ndiaye said on public television Wednesday night. A sum of two billion Central African francs (three million euros) has been released by the government to cope with the flooding said Ndiaye who was speaking after a meeting with the mayors of communities that have been affected. The emergency plan will allow the authorities to release financial assistance and mobilise equipment throughout the country. Several parts of Dakar and its suburbs as well as towns such as Mbour in the west and Kaffrine in the centre are under water after heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday.

“Reaching Africa’s smaller markets is a top priority for IFC” said IFC Director for West and Central Africa Yolande Duhem. “Through innovative financing increased advisory services and working together with partners who share our commitment to African development we have been able to finance more businesses in West and Central Africa. ” Among IFC’s major transactions in Senegal and West Africa in the fiscal year ended June 2009 was a $2 million trade finance line to Ecobank Senegal part of a regional financing of more than $200 million to Togo-based Ecobank Transnational Inc. In FY09 Dakar was named IFC’s subregional hub for West and Central Africa as part of a broader commitment to do more business in the region. In Senegal in particular IFC aims to support improved infrastructure especially in the power sector. IFC has previously invested in the Kounoune independent power project and expects to do more to support rural electrification. IFC continued to extend its regional reach in Africa to countries where it has traditionally been less active.

US Peace Corps pulls volunteers from Mauritania

humanitarian group the Peace Corps has pulled its volunteer workforce from Mauritania due to security concerns following an upturn in violence in the West African desert nation. "For security reasons we have taken 45 volunteers and 14 staff into our training centre (in Senegal)" Demba Sibibe a Peace Corps official said on Monday. government-backed group said on its Web site its volunteer programme would remain suspended until security conditions improved. The move by the group which has operated in Mauritania for more than 40 years comes after a surge in violence in the normally quiet former French colony struggling to clamp down on an al Qaeda presence within its borders.

CALITIN FR HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE GAMBIAA civil society group has just been launched in the Senegalese capital of Dakar to advocate for the enforcement of human rights in The Gambia. The Coalition for Human Rights in The Gambia was formed by Gambians living in Dakar and Senegalese and other international human rights media and civil society groups. These include Amnesty International Senegal branch The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) Press Union (Synpics) African Assembly for the Defence of Human Rights (RADDH) Inter Africa Network for Women Media Gender and Development (FAMEDEV) Network of Press and Parliament in Senegal (Reppas) and Radio Alternative Voice for Gambians (AVG). As part of its immediate activities members of the coalition on Tuesday August 25th 2009 met with members of European missions overseeing The Gambia. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Dutch Austrian German French Spanish and Swedish Embassies. During the meeting the coalition’s delegates showcased series of human rights violations that has been taking place in The Gambia. The cases include the recent the incarceration of the six journalists journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh’s continuous disappearance arrest of villagers accused of being witches and the issue of Nigerian Mercenary Judges in the country.
