Aug 31 2009 4:44:55 PM Augustin Senghor a 44-year-old lawyer and mayor of the island of Goree has been elected new president of the Senegal Football Association during an extra-ordinary congress in Dakar on Sunday. Senghor who led US Goree to gain promotion to the top flight in Senegal polled 174 votes to defeat El Hadji Malick Gackou (130 votes) and umar Diop (26 votes). Two other candidates: former international goalkeeper Cheikh Seck and former vice-president of the FA Alioune Cisse withdrew a day to the elections. Senghor headed a caretaker committee after the FA executive committee was dissolved following a shock first round exit of the country at last year’s Africa Cup of Nations. The caretaker committee among other things launched a professional football league recently.

Senegal sends police to aid Darfur mission

29 (UPI) — Senegalese police officers strengthened the joint African Union-United Nations peacekeeping force in Darfur by adding 137 officers the UN said. The peacekeeping force protects civilians and ensures access for humanitarian workers in the Darfur region of the Sudan. The officers are part of a unit with specialized training in high-risk operations. Their main task is protection of civilians and they often do community policing or work in camps housing displaced people the UN said.

The project will be used to strengthen the capacity of the Senegal Agricultural Research Institute (ISRA) to generate and disseminate SLM-targeted research and knowledge.
