A Chadian court last year convicted Habre in absentia andsentenced him to death for crimes against the state. The African Union gaveSenegal the right to judge Habre. But Belgium reportedly said Senegal’s failureto prosecute Habre so far violates international law. Legalcounsel for Human Rights Watch Reed Brody told VA his organization supports Belgium’s claims against Senegal.

Cellphone transforms Africans’ financial life

The Kenyan farmer is among millions at the forefront of a pocket-size financial revolution that’s sweeping Africa. Mobile banking powered by cellphones is allowing people who could never afford traditional bank accounts to send receive and save money often just by writing text messages. Cheap and efficient m-banking services are cropping up from South Africa to Senegal. They’re the latest example of how the cellphone has transformed life in sub-Saharan Africa where over the past decade mass-market mobile networks have stitched together countries and families long separated by distance poverty and shoddy infrastructure. Less than one-fifth of Africans have bank accounts and far fewer access the Internet. The continent however recently surpassed the United States and Canada with 340 million cellphone users and is adding 70 million more each year according to Wireless Intelligence a market-research group. Cellphone companies are racing to capitalize by offering banking tools that make it easier for city dwellers to send money to rural relatives small businesses to pay their employees and parents to deposit their children’s school fees.

Senegal’s Minister of Health Safiatou Thiam Sy says the stakes are high in Senegal as well as the rest of Africa. Thiam Sy says malaria weighs heavily upon not only the health of the region but also its productivity and economic development. Treating malaria in children she says is key to the development of Senegal and Africa as a whole. UNICEF estimates that malaria may negatively effect economic growth by 1. 3 percent of annual gross domestic product in the hardest hit Sub-Saharan African countries.

The appeals court confirmed a September 2008 sentence slapped on El Malick Seck who has been in detention ever since said his lawyer Me Demba Cire Bathily. Seck — head of the daily 24 Heures Chrono — was accused of “diffusing false information” for writing an article in which he said Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade and his son Karim were involved in money laundering.

After trashing Cote d’Ivoire which was considered as the odds-on favourite of the competition by soccer observers Zambia distorted all the forecasts. Meanwhile the Senegalese local team confirms its reputation. Considered as the underdog of the championship Zambia created a stir by achieving their French coach Herve Renard’s dream of surprisingly walloping the host team by three to nil in the opener. With their better technical and tactical line-up the local Zambian players overshadowed their Ivorian counterparts who however raised some hope among many soccer fans.
