Belgium challenges Senegal on Chad dictator

The former dictator has lived in exile in Senegal since 1990. During his regime an estimated 40000 political opponents were killed and countless others tortured. Senegal agreed to bring Mr Habré to trial but has never acted on this pledge. Belgium is now demanding that Senegal take action or extradite Mr Habré to Belgium.

Though the child is likely to feel better after the first day of treatment the disease is likely to return and even worsen if the full course is not completed. Novartis says they going to great lengths alongside health officials to educate the public and health workers about the proper use of the drug. Senegal’s Minister of Health Safiatou Thiam Sy says the stakes are high in Senegal as well as the rest of Africa. Thiam Sy says malaria weighs heavily upon not only the health of the region but also its productivity and economic development. Treating malaria in children she says is key to the development of Senegal and Africa as a whole. UNICEF estimates that malaria may negatively effect economic growth by 1. 3 percent of annual gross domestic product in the hardest hit Sub-Saharan African countries.

The $40 million program will be implemented in 10 of 14 regions in Senegal. Working closely with the Ministry of Education USAID will: target more than 50000 vulnerable children and street children many of whom participate in the Koranic (Islamic) school system in Senegal and in collaboration with local religious leaders and elected officials ensure that they get increased educational support; develop a new curriculum that includes a focus on existing needs in the job market; promote issues of good governance with students and help implement them within the middle school curriculum; improve management and governance of the education system in Senegal through collaboration with Parent-Teacher Associations; increase WiFi access in more than 400 schools and provide training on new technologies that will support learning in the schools; and implement a national campaign to raise awareness of public-private partnerships in the education sector and encourage their formation.

Jail terms for five over Senegal cocaine haul

A Venezuelan national and a Colombian were sentenced to 10 years in jail 20 months after the haul — with a street value of 275 million dollars (219 million euros) was discovered by Senegalese authorities. The men are on the run and were tried in absentia. Two other Colombians and an Ecuadorian whose whereabouts are known got sentences of eight years.

Senegal Asks Bulgaria Foreign Minister to pen Embassy in Dakar

The Senegalese PM and Foreign Minister stated that they expected from Bulgaria to provide education for Senegalese students in the areas of geology and energy specifically nuclear energy. Until 1989 Bulgaria had granted two scholarships per year for the education of Senegalese students while over 12000 African employees have graduated in Bulgaria. Senegal further insists on opening a Bulgarian Embassy in Dakar. Currently Bulgaria does not have an embassy in any of the African francophone countries despite being a member of the Francophone Community. Kalfin did not made a firm commitment about opening the Embassy but told the Darik radio that Bulgaria must have at least one Embassy in francophone Africa. The country of Benin has also asked to have Bulgarian diplomatic representation during Kalfin’s visit there Wednesday. After 1963 Bulgaria established diplomatic relations with 45 African countries with 15 diplomatic or trade representations in countries located south of the Sahara desert.
