Senegal’s first prime minister dies: reports

Dia was 99 years old. Before becoming Senegal’s first premier the socialist Dia had already held several important political positions in the country before independence. A longtime protege of Senegal’s first president Leopold Sedar Senghor Dia fell out with Senghor who accused him of trying to stage a coup d’etat in 1962. Dia was sentenced to life in prison but released in 1974 and later pardonned.

“We discovered his disease the moment he started school” says the mother of eight-year-old Cheikh who is being treated at Dakar’s leprosy centre at the capital’s Fann hospital and university complex. Tucked away in a corner the facility is serviced by 20 doctors who diligently attend to the patients some of whom are still shunned by society. “Cheikh has been following polychemotherapy for 12 months. This treatment involves three antibiotics” says his doctor mar Sane adding that this helped to contain the spread of the bacillus.
