Senegal sentences gay AIDS activists to eight years

The men were convicted and sentenced to eight years inprison on January 6 after confiscated condoms and lubricant were introduced asevidence during their trial. Homosexual sex itself is illegal in thepredominantly Muslim country and the men received additional time for”criminal association. The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commissionand other activists have condemned the government’s action which is stricterthan previous sanctions and has left many wondering whether a larger crackdownis yet to come.

NGs ask African Union to press Senegal on Habre trial

In July 2006 the African Union (AU) asked Senegal to prosecute Habre for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Habre is living in Senegal. But since that request “Senegal has taken no action and the AU has given it no support” said a joint statement by Chadian human rights bodies the African Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDH) Human Rights Watch and the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) received in Dakar Wednesday. The African heads of state will meet in Addis Abeba this Sunday for an AU summit.

Iran to build trade center in Senegal

He added that during his last visit to Senegal Shiraz?s private sector successfully formed a trade consortium in the African country that would help promote trade between Senegal and the Iranian province. Senegal sends envoy to Mauritanian junta leader

“The message is about friendship and brotherhood as part of the excellent relations between Mauritania and Senegal” Foreign Affairs ministry chief executive Mankeur Ndiaye said after his audience with General uld Abdoul Aziz. Ndiaye told reporters Wednesday that “both countries are united by brotherhood and neighbourhood ties but also blood and history. “The audience is part of the ongoing dialogue between the two heads of state and governments on the one hand and pursuing talks begun a few days between the two presidents in Doha Qatar on the other” he said.
