“We discovered his disease the moment he started school” says the mother of eight-year-old Cheikh who is being treated at Dakar’s leprosy centre at the capital’s Fann hospital and university complex. Tucked away in a corner the facility is serviced by 20 doctors who diligently attend to the patients some of whom are still shunned by society. “Cheikh has been following polychemotherapy for 12 months. This treatment involves three antibiotics” says his doctor mar Sane adding that this helped to contain the spread of the bacillus.
Senegal seeks economic agreements with Iran

24 (ISNA)-Senegalese Minister of Commerce Mamadou Diop Dccroix called for signing economic agreements with Iran in a bid to boost commercial cooperation. In a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Mir Kazemi Mamadou Diop Dccroix highlighted Iran and Senegal’s high potentials for economic cooperation and said the two countries need to create required condition and ink commercial deals to lift cooperation. Masoud Mir Kazemi on his part underlined Iran’s various potentials on agricultural products foodstuff medicine medical equipments and technical services and called for development of commercial relations. He said that through meetings dispatching commercial delegations and holding fairs the private sections of both sides can receive information on each others’ capabilities and flourish their economies. Mir Kazemi then stressed signing a bilateral agreement on customs and transportation cooperation and supporting investment and said the agreements would assure private sectors to take steps for expansion of bilateral economic ties. He then said development of Iran-Senegal economic cooperation will pave the way for Iran to deliver its products to other African states via Senegal.

According to e release from the Gambia Football Association (GFA) the encounter is part of preparations for the final of the first edition of the African Nations Cup Championship (CHAN) to be held in Abidjan next month in which Senegal has qualified to participate. In this international friendly match the Teranga Lions od Senegal will face a selection of Gambian local players who will be selected from various top clubs like Sangamer Wallidan and Armed Forces the GFA release said. The CHAN is for local-based players which was introduced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 2008 to bring competition among local players in the continent. It will take place in Abidjan Cote d’Ivoire from 22 February to 6 March 2009. The Gambia entered in the competition but were eliminated by Mauritania in the first round. The Mourabitounes of Mauritania held the local Scorpions to a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Banjul before being forced to a goalless draw in Nouakchott two weeks later.

French aid agency reports $22 mln in support of Senegal in 2008

22 (Xinhua) — The French Development Agency (AFD) engaged in nearly 22 million U. dollars in 2008 in support of Senegal will commit millions more this year the aid agency said on Wednesday. Visiting AFD Director General Jean-Michel Severino said the agency’s assistance came to 17 million euros (21. 9 million dollars) in favor of the Senegalese government and the public sector in 2008.
