5 million dollars for sports cultural and sanitation projectsChina pledges multi-million-dollar aid to Senegal11 hours agoDAKAR (AFP) — China on Thursday said it would extend Senegal aid worth 8. 9 million euros (11. 5 million dollars) for sports cultural and sanitation projects. “The Chinese government will provide the Senegalese government aid totalling 80 million yuan for cooperation projects” Chinese Ambassador Lu Shaye said. This would be used to build or refurbish 11 stadia a museum a national theatre in Dakar and a children’s hospital Senegalese Finance Minister Abdoulaye Diop said.

The men were convicted and sentenced to eight years inprison on January 6 after confiscated condoms and lubricant were introduced asevidence during their trial. Homosexual sex itself is illegal in thepredominantly Muslim country and the men received additional time for”criminal association. The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commissionand other activists have condemned the government’s action which is stricterthan previous sanctions and has left many wondering whether a larger crackdownis yet to come.
NGs ask African Union to press Senegal on Habre trial

In July 2006 the African Union (AU) asked Senegal to prosecute Habre for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Habre is living in Senegal. But since that request “Senegal has taken no action and the AU has given it no support” said a joint statement by Chadian human rights bodies the African Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDH) Human Rights Watch and the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) received in Dakar Wednesday. The African heads of state will meet in Addis Abeba this Sunday for an AU summit.
