But the singer who was born in the United States but spent his early life in Senegal where his family is from says he never knew it. age is not important over there.

Friday January 23 2009 First Australian Resources increases interest in oil block in Senegal First Australian Resources (ASX:FAR) is pleased to announce that following meetings held in Dakar last week it has received formal approval from Petrosen (Senegal’s National il Company) to increase its working interest to 90 percent and assume peratorship under the Contract for Exploration and Hydrocarbon Production Sharing covering the Rufisque and Sangomar and Sangomar Deep offshore blocks. Following meetings with Petrosen a meeting was also held with the Minister of Energy for the Republic of Senegal to confirm FAR’s appointment as perator its increased working interest and to provide an activity update since Ministerial approval of a one year extension to the First Renewal Period was granted. FAR is pleased to advise that following the grant of the extension and as foreshadowed in earlier ASX releases it has received a third written offer from a major to participate in the exploration of these offshore blocks. Negotiations are continuing. The increased interest in the blocks has placed FAR in a stronger negotiating position in the farmout process that was delayed by the need to obtain an extension. FAR is seeking to be free carried through the drilling of the first exploratory well.

French aid agency reports $22 mln in support of Senegal in 2008

22 (Xinhua) — The French Development Agency (AFD) engaged in nearly 22 million U. dollars in 2008 in support of Senegal will commit millions more this year the aid agency said on Wednesday. Visiting AFD Director General Jean-Michel Severino said the agency’s assistance came to 17 million euros (21. 9 million dollars) in favor of the Senegalese government and the public sector in 2008.

EU and UN condemn arrest of AIDS workers in Senegal

n December 19th police raided the apartment of Mr Diadji Diouf who heads AIDES Senegal an organisation providing HIV prevention services to men who have sex with men and arrested him and his guests. All nine were convicted earlier this month of criminal conspiracy and engaging in acts against the order of nature and sentenced to eight years in jail. UNAIDS said it “deplores” the arrests and said it is leading a coalition bringing together organisations from civil society the public sector and partners such as the French Embassy and the Swedish Embassy representing the European Union to lobby for the release of the detainees. “There is no place for homophobia” said UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé. “Universal access to HIV prevention treatment care and support must be accessible to all people in Senegal who are in need?including men who have sex with men.

At a news conference which he jointly addressed with officials of the Senegal chapter of the NG International Association of the Soldiers of Peace the musician expressed his “deep concern at the escalation of violence in the world. “He appealed to the Senegalese authorities as well as to the international community and to people who seek peace and justice to make greater efforts in order to put an end to the sufferings of people in countries where there are war conflicts and tensions whatever their nature.
