For a country that has produced stars like Sunday Oliseh Stephen Keshi Austin Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu Nigeria’s record in international competition is average to say the least. Two African Nations Cup triumphs the last in 1994 is appalling for a country with such a huge passion for football. Nigeria have also never made it past the last 16 of a World Cup unlike their great African rivals Cameroon and Senegal. Missing out on that World Cup will make them extra determined to reach 2010 but to do so their stars will need to find a consistency sorely lacking in recent times. At the 2008 African Nations Cup finals in Ghana Nigeria were tedium personified. Despite boasting the attacking prowess of players like Obafemi Martins Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Kanu himself Berti Vogts’ Super Eagles only scrambled into the quarterfinals and no further scoring just three goals in four games.
