Senegal police raid TV station after prices protest

Walf TV broadcast footage ofpolice striking demonstrators with electrified batons and firing tear gas tobreak up the banned protest by more than a hundred people in the suburbs of theSenegalese capital Dakar. Three people were arrestedincluding the head of the Association of Senegalese Consumers the group whichorganised the march to call attention to a sharp rise in the cost of living inthe poor West African country. After the images werebroadcast dozens more youths gathered to throw stones at police. “Members ofthe DIC entered our offices and demanded us to hand over the cassettes oftoday’s demonstration” Aissatou Diop Fall head of Walf TV told Reuters.

After the defeat Egyptians players burst into tears like some Indomitable Lions players did in Ghana after the Finals of CAN 2008 1-0 spanking by the Pharaohs of Egypt. Senegal also picked Africa’s last ticket in the World Cup jamboree by beating Ivory Coast during penalty shootouts in the second semi final game at Durban South Africa. Though Cameroon and Senegal have qualified for the World Cup Senegal thrashed Cameroon 12-6 in the final on Sunday March 30 to emerge as African champions. Sunday’s final was a splendid show of both teams that have the same play style. Both sides were physically fit and proved to spectators that they have a structure that can withstand any opponent in the World level. ?In a telephone interview with CPJ today police spokesman Ndiaye said he did not know which governmental authority had ordered the raid. The police department ?is not limited in its actions? he said. The president of Senegal?s official broadcast media regulator the National Council of Broadcasting Regulation (known by its French acronym CNRA) Nancy Ndiaye Ngom declined today to comment on the matter via telephone. Ngom a magistrate by trade heads a nine-member board of presidential appointees mandated to regulate broadcasting according to CPJ research. Walf TV part of the Walf media group which publishes leading independent newspaper Wal Fadjri is one of four private television channels in Senegal.
