A powerful thunderstorm the night before flooded Dieng’s home in Thiawlene a suburb of the town of Rufisque. Fifteen-foot waves crashed into the beach-side community bursting its earthen levy and flooding dozens of homes and the local cemetery. Dieng 78 is the patriarch of his family about 100 of whom live in a small compound of square concrete houses. The night of the flood water seeped into the bedrooms “and lifted all the beds” Dieng said through an interpreter… Melting glaciers increase the oceans’ volume and rising temperatures “warm seawater and cause it to expand” explained Carl Hershner a marine science professor at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester. “Those things combined cause a rate of sea-level rise. ” virginia suffers tooLike Dieng in Senegal Virginians have had problems with rising sea levels. 27 GNA – Angola on Sunday surprised soccer fans including supporters of Senegal when they came from a goal down to beat Senegal by three goals to one in the first match of “Group D” of the Ghana 2008 at the Tamale Sports Stadium. The Senegalese gave a false impression of carrying the day to the massive Tamale supporters rooting for them when Faye Abdouye hit the back of the net in the 20th minute to register the first goal. The goal came as a result of a free kick neatly taken by El Hadji Diouf and Abdouye wasted no time to slot the ball into the net. The Angolans were not let down by the solitary goal but kept on with a fighting resilience as they tried to cancel the lead with their attempts going off target to end the first half. The second half started in favour of the Angolans who despite being down by a lone goal persevered and fought gallantly and it came as no surprise when in the 50th minute their playmaker Alberto Mateus headed home to cancel the Senegalese lead.
Super Eagles Struggle to Soar
hmyNews International – Jan 27, 2008
Tunisia required an 82nd-minute goal to rescue a point in an exciting 2-2 draw with Senegal. South Africa left it even later scoring in the 87th minute to bag a 1-1 draw with Angola. This Sunday will see Senegal take on Angola and Tunisia meet South Africa as all four teams make a bid to take a grip of their qualifying group. Another cliche that is constantly used in the football world is the one about it being a “funny old game” — that it most certainly is although it will not be that amusing for the Super Eagles should they be packing their bags for an early departure from Ghana early next week. ©2008 hmyNews.
