Decentralisation of the police force led to the creation of unarmed municipal police forces in the main cities which facilitated the re-integration of policemen fired after the massive strike of 1987.

There are many foreign embassies in Senegal and many UN bodies have their regional office in Dakar. Senegalese elites are well represented in international organisations and Senegalese troops have a long history of contributing to UN and African peacekeeping operations. Bilateral relations with neighbouring states are most intense with Gambia and Guinea-Bissau partly because their tiny size allows Dakar to dominate them and partly because their close proximity to Senegal’s unstable southern region of Casamance makes their stability and co-operation vital to Senegal’s own national security.

Who thought Nigeria could sneak into the quarter finals at the expense of Mali?Tunisia and Angola share the group leadership on four points while South Africa and Senegal are on one point each. With Tunisia having a one-goal difference the possibility of another explosive showdown in Tamale cannot be ruled out. Mathematics can still play in favour of either Senegal or South Africa. If any of them win 3-0 and Angola and Tunisia cancel out each other then the whole scenario will become complicated. Both Senegal and South Africa are severely wounded after suffering an identical 3-1 defeat three days ago. The match in Tamale has the potential of providing another night of football feast going by the form-book of the two teams. The match in Tamale has the potential of providing another night of football feast going by the form-book of the two teams. They exploded on Tuesday night to dish out an identical 3-1 wins over Senegal and Angola to set themselves clear at the top. The agony of defeat was felt deep by Senegalese coach Henri Kasperzcak who resigned after 12 hours and there is a possibility that other coaches will fall by the wayside. Angola’s Louis Goncalves and his Tunisian counterpart Roger Lemere cannot experiment at this moment and they have both promised to be at full strength in Thursday’s late combat.
