"Fewer are arriving because ever more are dying in the crossing? complains the president of the Asociación de Inmigrantes Africanos (ASIAF) Secka Mbaye. He explains: ?The crossing used to take three to four days and nowadays the boats are at sea sometimes 15 or 20 days to avoid capture. ? Hardly any more boats come from Senegal or Mauretania but many from Ghana Ivory Coast and Guinea Bissau. The Frontex numbers don?t gel with those of the Guardia Civil. In fact one needs to cite just one case to show there?s something rotten about Arias? numbers. In early September ten corpses were salvaged when a boat capsized off Gran Canaria. So in just that case more dead refugees arrived on the Canaries than the Frontex executive cites for the entire year.
