San Francisco Chronicle – Dec 23, 2007
Thus it was an out-of-the-ordinary event when Nazareth was chosen as the venue for one prong of a recent international poetry festival. Aptly named Sha’ar (Gateway) the annual festival is run by the Israeli poetry society Helicon which strives to use poetry’s spiritual potential to bridge the deep chasms in Israeli society. It hosted poets from 15 countries from Latvia to Senegal to the United States and significantly also included local Jewish and Palestinian poets. The Nazareth evening was sandwiched in between a glamorous hip locale in Tel Aviv one day and a dignified forum in Jerusalem the next. Nazareth may be less than a two-hour drive from either Tel Aviv or Jerusalem but it is worlds away on the cultural map. ne car arriving from Tel Aviv became hopelessly lost trying to find the venue amid the winding streets. Numerous cell phone calls proved to no avail and when a police van was finally flagged down the officers gave the car a personal escort to the door – a symbol that hit home not only how utterly Jewish Israelis feel like strangers in Nazareth but how completely their foreignness is printed upon them.
