A New Accent on ‘Public’ From NPR

Martin who rose to the top in both print and TV news over the past two decades has left television to launch her own radio newsmagazine "Tell Me More" NPR’s latest effort to push beyond the classic definition of a public radio listener: highly educated white suburban. “Some of the stories we do they would have laughed me out of the room on TV” says Martin who spent a decade as a correspondent on ABC’s “Nightline” before the network dropped the show’s long-form stories in favor of a quicker pace. n "Tell Me More" if Martin wants to devote time to news from. Rastafarians and followers of his African Shembe Christian Church were among large crowds at a public funeral service before a private burial. The singer was shot dead on 18 ctober in Johannesburg in what police called a botched car-jacking attempt. A memorial service in Johannesburg on Wednesday was packed with mourners. Crime waveAt Sunday’s funeral local musicians and fans from across Africa sang hymns while Dube’s wife Zanele and children broke down in tears as one of his best-known songs was played over a loudspeaker the Reuters news agency reported.

The pair carry British hopes as they aim to succeed the injured Jo Pavey as winner of the country’s biggest 10-mile road race. Their lympic ambitions have given added spice to the encounter in Portsmouth although neither is predicting they will emulate the feat of Pavey the first British winner for eight years. With Paula Radcliffe expected to attain the lympic qualifying standard in next weekend’s New York marathon effectively only two places remain on the team.
