Chilean Supreme Court Extradites Fujimori
BBSNews – Sep 23, 2007
In contrast to these cases Fujimori is not facing trial in an international court and it is the Chilean Supreme Court that has decided that he can be handed over to Peruvian authorities pursuant to an extradition request filed by prosecutors during the administration of then-President of Peru Alejandro Toledo. The Supreme Court’s ruling also sets an important precedent for other countries that are faced with the question of what to do with former heads of state wanted for atrocities. For example in the case of Hiss? Habr?the former dictator of Chad who is in detention in Senegal Senegal has formally agreed to an African Union request to prosecute Habr?”This decision is a remarkable example of the role that domestic institutions of justice can play in enforcing international standards and furthering accountability even in highly sensitive cases” said Vivanco. “It will now be up to Peru’s courts to show that they are up to the task of trying Fujimori and guaranteeing him a fair trial. “Human Rights Watch said that it would be closely watching the proceedings in Peru to ensure a thorough and independent investigation and trial in accordance with international standards of justice and due process. The Supreme Court ruling authorizes Fujimori’s extradition to face prosecution and trial in Peru for the killings of 25 people in two separate massacres in 1991 and 1992. The massacres were allegedly carried out by the Colina Group a specialized squad of military intelligence officers.

Fulham 3 Manchester City 3: Murphy the great leveller for Fulham in…
Independent – Sep 23, 2007
Such a weakness has hampered Fulham so far this season and it showed no sign of going away after the interval. It was at the break that Sanchez brought on Diomansy Kamara for Davies and the change had an instant positive effect just three minutes into the second half. The Senegal striker was brought down just outside the area by Dunne and in the set-piece Kamara ran over the ball before Bouazza struck a hard curling shot past Kaspar Schmeichel. Fulham could only celebrate for two minutes. A long high ball to Emile Mpenza was knocked down by the Belgian striker to Petrov whose shot was parried and Mpenza tapped in the rebound from two yards. Ten minutes later City were in the lead thanks to a well-worked move between Petrov and Elano. The Brazilian international chipped his return pass into Petrov’s path and he found the tiny gap between Niemi and his near post.
Bad idea for immigration

ne hour without lights is not likely to enlighten anyone in California on that front. As a Californian living in West Africa I can confirm that power is a greater luxury than we in the United States ever consider but also that time spent without it can be precious. In Senegal we have power outages on a weekly sometimes daily basis and these outages often last 10 hours or more day or night. With the power out people quiet down put chairs and mats outside talk doze off and eat by candlelight. There is something very human about the whole thing: You feel the smallness of your presence on Earth and experience the comfort of other people in its simplest form. So to feel the effect of reducing our power consumption back at home maybe a couple of hours a week instead of one hour each year is more like it. Villages are cut off and mud houses and roads have been swept away. But this is a fraction of the devastation caused by some of the heaviest rains in memory to have hit a great swath of Africa from the Sahel to the horn. According to the UN yesterday 18 of the poorest and normally driest countries in Africa from Senegal Mauritania Mali and Burkina Faso in the west to Kenya Sudan and Ethiopia in the east have been seriously hit by months of torrential rains which meterologists forecast will continue in places for many more weeks. “We believe at least 650000 homes have been destroyed 1. 5 million people affected and nearly 200 people so far drowned” said Elisabeth Brys at the UN ffice for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (cha) in Geneva. “This is harvest time for many countries and there are already food shortages. The rains linked to ocean temperature changes of El Niño have caught governments off guard.

That led Rihanna into a Bob Marley tribute which was good and eventually to that instrumental Scratch with the four dancers — two male two female — trying to scratch washing boards they were forced to wear in time to the beat. Senegal-born and Atlanta-based R&B singer Akon had the final spot on what was called a co-headlining concert. It was Rihanna’s show though. It was good to hear the first “London make some noise” from an Akon minion somewhere off-stage and watch the same cheesy Konvicted logo with the golden handcuffs that was backstopping Akon when he was here with Gwen Stefani a few months ago. Unfortunately the rest of Akon’s set was too late for review purposes preventing this reviewer from counting the minutes until the hunky star took off his top. My guess would be 15 minutes.
