Sudan: Senegal considers quitting AU force in Sudan

In April Senegal warned that it could pull out its troops unless the overstretched AU force in Darfur was given UN support after five Senegalese peacekeepers were killed. Senegal which more than 500 troops in the 7 000-strong AU contingent is widely respected for their role in Darfur. Foreign Minister Cheikh Tidiane Gadio said Senegal was making a “global analysis” of the Darfur peacekeeping situation. Meanwhile the president of the republic has fixed a framework for the decisions expected from the government of Sudan and the rebels” Gadio said in an interview on Friday.

When the rains come down in this part of the world malaria sickness which is spread by infected mosquitoes soon follows. Almost one million people die in Africa every year from malaria more than on any other continent. ne village in the West African country of Senegal has been saving its money to fight back malaria this year. Phuong Tran has more from VA's West Africa bureau in Dakar. Thienaba is a village of about 15000 people. Within the past six years villagers have cut malaria infections in half and local health officials say no one died of malaria last year. But things were not always like this.

Adama Sall praised the intervention of a “privileged key partner” which has delightedly and unconditionally” been present in Senegal particularly in the water sector since 1986. The Senegalese minister revealed that out of the nine major IDB-funded projects five have been implemented three being carried out and one to start. In addition the IDB is “efficiently” supporting Senegal in building boreholes wells watering places for livestock animation health sensitisation and education but also in the control of safe drinking water he said adding that the Bank is one of the few donors to maintain its presence in the southern part of the country notably in the Casamance region which has been plagued by a conflict since 1981. The bank has also “greatly supported” the energy sector Minister Samuel Sarr said noting that the financial body had set four funding lines to purchase new generating sets and reinforce the existing ones for the state power company SENELEC. With a share of US$24. 6 billion Senegal as a founding member of the Bank has on the whole secured US$577 million allocated for development assistance said the executives of the Jeddah-based ( Saudi Arabia) financial body which is led by Saudi Arabian Ahmad Mohamed Ali Al Madani.
