Senegal announces plan to build $30bn capital
NEWS.com.au – May 31, 2007
article-tools –> By Daniel Flynn in Lompoul Senegal May 31 2007 10:56pm THE wind-swept beach at the village of Lompoul stretches as far as the eye can see washed by Atlantic breakers and dotted with brightly painted African fishing boats. It is on this remote and beautiful stretch of coast near to his birthplace that Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade sees a glittering new capital rising from the sands – a $30 billion “Dubai on the Atlantic”. Dakar the fast-growing coastal capital of the former French colony is being strangled by lack of space. It lies on a peninsula at Africa’s most westerly point linked to the continent by a 20km wide isthmus choked by traffic. At Lompoul some 150km north the rolling dunes stretch far inland.

We cannot keep the rooms vacant because there are people who want to use them“ the source said. “It is good to know exactly their arrival date so that we start organising for their accommodation“the source added.

Gambian authorities officially deny supplying Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (Mouvement des Forces Démocratiques de la Casamance: MFDC) guerrillas. Gambia is a major regional trafficking hub where business with Casamance is important and some in Gambia may be seeking to make economic gain from Casamance. Some may also be using the conflict as a bargaining ploy in relations with Senegal. The Casamançais Diola community in Gambia is huge and has been used as a supplementary electoral support base. For these reasons the MFDC has enjoyed a measure of freedom in Gambia. However Banjul has been under greater international pressure to prove its disassociation from the MFDC since 2002 and for example expelled the hardline MFDC spokesman Alexander Djiba from Banjul in December 2003.
